There is a moment when the Gargano is perfect: the water is already as clear as in July, the beaches are free, the prices of holiday homes in Manfredonia and surroundings are still reasonable, and you can park wherever you like without driving around for half an hour. That moment is called May and June. Once you have discovered it, you never go back in August.
In this article we tell you where to swim in the Gargano out of season: the most beautiful beaches, the coves reachable only on foot or by boat, and practical tips for organising your days so you do not waste a single minute of sea time. We start from Manfredonia, our home and the ideal base for exploring the entire Gargano coastline.
Manfredonia overlooks the gulf of the same name, a semicircle of sheltered sea that warms up faster than the open coast. In May the water temperature is already around 19-21 degrees: cool enough to be bracing, warm enough to swim for a long time without feeling cold. The beach at Siponto, 5 minutes from the town, is one of the longest in Puglia: fine sand, shallow seabed, gently lapping water. In May you find a few local families at weekends and almost nobody on weekdays.
For those looking for a comfortable base to stay in Manfredonia and reach a different beach every morning, Casa e Bottega is in the historic centre, 300 metres from the sea and with free parking nearby. A private holiday home is different from a hotel: you have a kitchen, you can prepare a packed lunch, leave at dawn without disturbing anyone, come back whenever you like. For sea lovers, it is the most flexible solution available.
If there is one place that represents the Gargano in the collective imagination, it is Baia delle Zagare. The two sea stacks emerging from turquoise water, the beach squeezed between white cliffs, the marine caves accessible by swimming: this is one of those places that seems invented and yet exists. It is about 40 minutes from Manfredonia, on the road towards Mattinata and Vieste.
In July and August the bay is overcrowded: the only beach has few sunbeds and they run out quickly, the access road becomes gridlocked. In May the picture is completely different. You can descend to the bay at your leisure, find a spot on the rocks or the sand, hire a kayak to explore the caves without queuing. The sea in late May easily reaches 21-22 degrees in this sheltered bay. The walk down takes about 15 minutes from the car park at the top: trainers are recommended, not flip-flops.
Mattinata is a small white village between the mountain and the sea, 25 minutes from Manfredonia. Its coastline is a succession of coves hidden among white limestone rocks, reachable on foot via marked trails, by boat on excursions leaving from the small harbour, or by sea kayak. Some have official names; others are simply "the one after the second bend" in the local oral tradition.
The coves of Mattinata have beds of white smoothed pebbles and water of unreal clarity: three metres from the shore you can clearly see the bottom. In May they are almost empty even at weekends. The coastal path that starts from the village lets you explore several in a single morning: descend, swim, climb back up, move on. An hour of walking with sea stops included.
From Mattinata boat excursions also run to coves inaccessible by land, such as Cala Acquaviva and the Grotta delle Rondinelle. In May prices are 30-40 per cent lower than in August, and the boats carry few passengers: you can talk to the boatman, ask to be taken where you want and stay longer. It is a completely different experience from the August boat trip, compressed into tight schedules and crowded.
The coastline south of Manfredonia, towards Siponto and then towards Zapponeta, is a long stretch of fine sand that in summer becomes dotted with beach clubs. In May most clubs have not yet opened, and the free beach extends for kilometres. The sand is fine and pale, the seabed shallow and suitable for families with children, and the sea is sheltered from the north wind by the shape of the gulf.
For locals, the beach at Siponto is the everyday beach: the one you go to in the afternoon after work, where you meet friends at the weekend, where you take the dog in spring when the summer bans have not yet started. It is a lived-in beach, not as dramatic as Baia delle Zagare, but convenient, accessible and close to everything. If you are looking for a holiday home in Manfredonia by the sea, Siponto is literally five minutes by car from the historic centre.
North of Manfredonia, beyond the harbour, the coastline changes character: less sand, more rocks and seabeds that drop away quickly. The Ippocampo di Mare area, about 10 km from town, has a few small gravel beaches with clear water that locals frequent all year round. In May you find fishermen and Sunday families, almost no tourists. The rocky seabeds are excellent for snorkelling: posidonia meadows, small reefs, fish that do not flee because they are not used to large numbers of people.
This part of the gulf warms up quickly in spring because it is sheltered from the wind and shallow. By late May the water temperature often exceeds 22 degrees, a few degrees more than the open coast towards Vieste. For a spontaneous dip after a walk or lunch in the area, it is one of the most pleasant spots near Manfredonia.
If you have several days and a base like Manfredonia, it is worth making at least one excursion to Vieste and Peschici, the two gems of the northern Gargano. Vieste has brilliant white sand beaches and the famous Pizzomunno, the limestone monolith rising from the water in front of the town. Peschici clings to a rocky promontory above the sea: its coves are reached on foot or by boat, and the water is among the most transparent in the whole Gargano.
From Manfredonia to Vieste is about 80 km along the coastal road: an hour and a half, but the road is beautiful. In June you can do the journey in a day: leave in the morning, beach at Vieste or Peschici, back in the evening. In July the same route takes twice as long because of traffic. That difference alone justifies coming out of season.
Manfredonia is the best logistical base for exploring the Gargano beaches in May and June. It sits halfway between the southern coastline (Siponto, Zapponeta) and the northern one (Mattinata, Vieste, Peschici). It has a lively historic centre with restaurants, cafés and a fish market, and a road network that lets you reach any beach in the Gargano in under an hour and a half.
Staying in a private holiday home in Manfredonia, such as Casa e Bottega, has concrete advantages over a hotel: a fully equipped kitchen to prepare meals, flexible hours, no obligation to have breakfast at a fixed time. In May and June you can find good prices and much greater availability than in summer. If you are looking for where to stay in Manfredonia for an out-of-season beach holiday, we recommend booking a few weeks in advance: demand for this period has grown considerably in recent years.
Is the sea in the Gargano warm enough in May?
In May the Adriatic Sea temperature in the Gargano is around 18-20 degrees: cool, but perfectly swimmable for those used to it. By late May and throughout June it rises to 22-24 degrees, ideal for long swims. Visitors from northern European countries find it very comfortable already.
What are the most beautiful beaches in the Gargano?
The most spectacular beaches in the Gargano are Baia delle Zagare (with its sea stacks), the coves of Mattinata reachable on foot or by boat, Cala Acquaviva, the Baia di Campi near Vieste and the white beaches of Peschici. Each is different: pebbles or sand, accessible by car or only by sea.
Are the Gargano beaches crowded in June?
In June the situation is still manageable: weekends can be busy at the main beaches, but on weekdays the more secluded coves are almost empty. July and August are peak season: the most famous beaches fill up by 9 a.m. Those who can come in June never go back to August.
How do you reach the coves that are inaccessible by car?
The most beautiful coves in the Gargano are reached on foot (marked trails from the coast), by kayak or by dinghy. From Manfredonia, Mattinata and Vieste there are boat excursions to coves unreachable by land. In May and June excursions are already running and prices are lower than in peak summer.
Is it worth coming to Manfredonia in May just for the sea?
Yes. The May sea in the Gargano is among the finest in Italy: crystal-clear water, free beaches with few sun loungers, no queues. Manfredonia is a perfect base: 5 minutes from the Siponto beach, 30 minutes from Mattinata, less than an hour from Vieste. A private holiday home in the historic centre lets you organise your days with maximum freedom.
